Duration of a visit departing
from Brussels: 3 hours.
Waterloo, the “morne plaine” (the gloomy field), as Victor Hugo called it,
thanks its celebrity to the historic battle that took place here and ended
with the final defeat of Napoleon in the battle of Mont-Saint-Jean
thanks to the legendary input of the Duke of Wellington.
Although in reality most of the fights took place on the territory of
neighbouring Braine l’Alleud and other surrounding places, history
remembers it as the “Battle of Waterloo” and its central attraction is the
Lion’s Mount.
28 tons of iron were used to manufacture the famous lion, now known all
over the world. You will see the fierce animal on top of a fabricated cone
of earth with a diameter of 169 meters. Dutchmen raised it presumably on
the right side of the place where the Prince of Orange was wounded.
From the top of the “mount”, 40 meter or 226 steps high, you can
contemplate the field where the famous and decisive Battle took place on
June 18, 1815.
You will also visit: the Visitor’s Centre, the Wellington museum, the
Napoleon museum, the Farm of Hougoumont, the Farm of la Haie Sainte, the
Farm of Mont-St-Jean, several monuments.
